Origin of Kickboxing

Kickboxing though confused with Muay Thai do finds its origin in this form of Thai boxing which is practiced in Thailand and some other parts of Asia. There are other arts too which are considered as kickboxing, this includes Japanese kickboxing, American boxing, Indian boxing, Burmese boxing and many other variations with a slight difference in the rules. Thus kickboxing is a disputed term, but the sport that is widespread as kickboxing find its origin to the modern day martial arts practitioners of Japan and America.

Kickboxing was first created and promoted by karate practitioner Tatsuo Yamada and Japanese boxing practitioner Osamu Noguchi in 1950’s. Tatsuo Yamada wanted to develop a sport which could include full contact rules, as it was unthinkable at this time to hit each other in Karate. But Yamada’s interest in learning Muay Thai was too incredible and he started learning this form from a Thai practitioner. Later this Thai practitioner was taken over by Osamu Noguchi who was also interested in Muay Thai and wanted to develop a new sensation sport. In 1963 Karate vs. Muay Thai matches were held in Thailand where Japan won the matches. Further Noguchi developed the first combat sport which was a combination of Muay, Thai, karate and boxing. Thus “Kickboxing” came into existence in 1966. Osamu Noguchi also formed The Kickboxing Association during the same time. This sport became so famous that it was broadcasted on television for many years. This sport is now widely known as “Japanese Kickboxing” and recently “K-1” to distinguish it from other sports with the same name.

Kickboxing originated in the United States of America in the 1970’s when the American Karate contestants became annoyed with the stringent rules of martial arts which didn’t involve full contact kicks and punches. However there were no set rules and infrastructure to support this sport. But this sport bloomed when The World Kickboxing Association came into existence.

Origin of Martial Arts

People are quite associated with the term “Martial Arts”, one must have heard of this in some movies, through friends or on T.V. But finding its roots is not that easy. Its history is considered to be quite complicated and there are many different views on it. There are several reports to prove that this fighting technique originated thousands of years ago and survived during the early civilizations. Basically this technique was developed by man to survive in the early days from attacks of animals or other groups. Gradually as mankind improvised so did this fighting technique.

Actually people associate this art to civilizations in the Asian countries but you will be interested to know that the writings on Egyptian pyramids depict pictures of bare hand fights. Not only this, Greek civilizations practiced boxing, wrestling and something known as pankration. These arts also found a place in early Olympiads and one should know that in olden days Olympiads were played to test ones vigor and power. Pankration is a combative art which consists of wrestling, certain throws used in boxing and grappling. As per the old records this art is as old as 700 B.C. Over the period of time this art form reached India. From here it went to China with many Buddhist monks. It is believed that Bodhidharma who is known as To-Mo in China was a Buddhist. He travelled from India to China’s famous Shaolin temple; this temple was then known as Songshan monastery. He imparted this art to many monks here. Further these Chinese monks help this art spread to other Asian countries. It is also considered that this technique was developed by Asians through breathing exercises. Martial arts reached the western parts of the world in the 19th century, when westerners started trading with Asian countries like Japan and China.

Therefore you can notice as martial arts spread to different parts of the world it developed slowly but steadily. It is even addressed differently by different countries. So one can consider that martial art is not an entity of any one country or a particular part of the world.
